Petition to Change/Add Degree Type for Current Graduate Students

This form is to be submitted by an academic department on behalf of a graduate student and only if the student was previously admitted into a degree program through GrAdmit/SLATE and is currently in active graduate status. This form can only be used for the following scenarios:

(1) *Change Master’s degree type. (E.g. Biological Sciences MA to Biological Sciences MS; Electrical Engineering MS to Electrical Engineering ME; etc.)

(2) *For current doctoral students who would like to receive a Master’s degree, within the same academic department, before completion of the doctoral degree. (i.e.: conferring a Master's degree en-route to a PhD, etc.)

(3) *For current doctoral students who would like to receive a Master’s degree as their terminal degree, within the same academic department, whereby effectively ending their doctoral career. (for example: a PhD student deciding they would prefer to exit their program with a Master's degree instead)

(4) *For current masters or doctoral students who would like to add an Advanced Certificate to their existing graduate degree.

(5) Add or Change Master's degree academic sub-plan.

Once reviewed and approved by the The Graduate School, an action on the student's Program/Plan stack in HUB to reflect the change in degree type will be made. A separate Program/Plan stack will be created for the student in HUB to reflect the addition of the Master’s degree or Adv. Cert. This Program/Plan stack will have a student career number incremented by one from the existing student career number.

*If approved for an international student, a copy of this petition form will be forwarded to the Office of International Student Services (ISS). International students are to consult with ISS if an updated I-20 is warranted.

PhD Unique Credits*

A minimum of 50 percent of the PhD program must consist of courses completed at UB that have not been applied toward any other degree program. The student and academic department hereby acknowledges that they will have a minimum of 36 graduate UB credits that is “unique” towards the PhD program.
